"No, life cannot be understood flat on a page. It has to be lived; a person has to get out of his head, has to fall in love, has to memorize poems, has to jump off bridges into rivers, has to stand in an empty desert and whisper sonnets under his breath... We get one story, you and I, and one story alone. God has established the elements, the setting and the climax and resolution. It would be a crime not to venture out, wouldn't it?"

Soccer Mom

Friday, July 8, 2011

After nannying two girls for most of the day throughout this past week as their mother went on a trip, my car has gotten rather cluttered. Instead of describing my week, here's a snapshot of what I cleaned out of my car tonight:

  • A ridiculous amount of fruit snacks
  • Garbage bags, the huge, heavy-duty kind that janitors use, because anything can, and probably will, happen
  • Socks, two pairs of three different sizes
  • Chuck E. Cheese tokens
  • Whoopie cushion from Chuck E. Cheese that immediately broke after being used once (can't say I was too disappointed about that)
  • Juice box straws. Which, by the way, I have become awfully talented in driving one-handed while the other hand searches for fallen juice box straws behind me/places straw into the microscopic hole of the juice box. Don't you just feel so safe with me on the road?
  • A fishing pole
  • A dog biscuit
  • More fruit snacks
  • Three bathing suits and towels, along with various pool accessories
  • Bug spray and sunscreen
  • Sidewalk chalk
  • Nine cups used for my favorite childhood summertime activity: catching crawdads
  • Two shoes that don't match
  • Various bits of candy

It's been a rather eventful week, especially since I've had to come to terms with officially becoming a soccer mom.

Heat Spells, Whining, and Breakdowns...Not Just Any Menopausal Lady, It's My Car Ernestine

Friday, June 25, 2010

This past week I was able to go down to Cleveland and merely have a chill week. I read books all day long, which is my idea of a dream vacation. Even though I'm in college, my favorite type of books are still children's/young adult books like The Bridge To Terebithia and The Chronicles Of Narnia, they're just so much more interesting and creative.
I also did some long overdue drawing. I'm rather proud of it as this could be the first art project I've actually completed in less than a year. Or actually ever.

Check out that behemoth

Today, I was wrapping up my Cleveland expedition by attending a friend's wedding in Georgia--only about 2 hours away. Yet, obviously, my cranky car Ernestine had different plans.
About an hour into the trip, Ernestine started having one of her hot flashes again and as the car's temperature started climbing until it was hovering on the top red line that marks "DANGER! THE CAR WILL DIE!!!!"
Frantic, I pull off the nearest exit and stop at the nearest building: a motel. After hitting my head against the steering wheel, muttering "Why me?" I go inside to ask for help.
Unfortunately, the hotel clerk didn't speak english, here proceeds the following conversation:
Me: "Hi, I need some help. My car overheated and I was wondering if you knew anyone who could look at my car."
Clerk: {blank stare}
Me: "Car." {Nod of understanding} "Broken." {Nod of understanding} "Help?" {Nod of understanding}
Clerk: "I no can help. But take this. Find help." and she proceeds to give me one of about 100 yellowpage directories. "They free. Take one." {She leaves}.
After I called a few mechanics who told me that it would cost money to tow my car so they could look at it, I gave up for a while and went next door to the Long John Silver's for a drink. It was at this time that I dubbed this summer, "FML summer".

By this time the wedding had already started and I was still an hour away so woefully, I made the decision to do what I could to just try and get home.

This has not been Ernestine's first time to have an onset of overheating, yet each time is interestingly different. The last time it happened was when my sister an
d I were heading back to school after Christmas. That time, Ernestine decided that she wouldn't overheat as long as she was going faster than 40 mph. However, once we hit stop-and-go traffic, we ended up taking a 2 hour long detour so we didn't have to keep stopping and thus, murdering the car.

After such experiences, we now carry a ridiculous amount of car coolant. So, I ended up taking the coolant and pouring a ridiculous amount into Ernestine and praying that she would live until I got home (a 3 hour trip from here).

Now, the unfortunate problem with Ernestine is that once she has overheated and has been turned off, many times she doesn't start back up again until even hours later. Not wanting to be stranded again and possibly after dark, there was only one chance of going directly home.

As air conditioning also happens to lead to overheating cars, I had to drive without the AC on. In 96 degree weather. In the world's most humid place. I felt like the Thanksgiving turkey, having to roast in the oven for hours.

Then, it started raining unexpectedly. Just as I had decided to roll down a window that once you roll down, doesn't roll back up.

After sitting in a pool of my sweat and having been rained on, Ernestine
and I started to smell pretty rank. It's always a bad sign when one is repulsed by their own scent. By that time, I was so happy to be home that I couldn't have cared less.

Thus affirming that name, "FML Summer".

Going To Bed At 10:30 On A Summer Friday Night

Friday, May 28, 2010

I know right? You're probably thinking, "But Pookie, you do nothing but party 24/7, how are you going to bed at 10:30? Are you feeling alright? You must be sick."

Well, my good friends, I'm sad to admit that this is not a one time rare occasion, but has become the routine while at home. Since I was grounded from Thailand and now Deer Run, this is what my past month has consisted of:
  • Watching Big Cat Diary on Animal Planet with my cat, telling her how lame she is for not being born a lion
  • Watching Criminal Minds as it is by far the greatest show currently on air--Caution: one will become addicted to this show as they try to figure out how serial killers act. If one watches this show too much, she/he will start seeing serial killers everywhere. My sister and I are suspicious about a few neighbors...
  • Watching Alias, the greatest show ever created. It's all about a CIA agent kicking butt. Since it's no longer on air, I've rented the entire series aka greatness in a box.
  • Gardening: my mother has always had a garden, and yet every year we always end up having way too many cucumbers and zucchinis. Have you ever tried zucchini soup? It's utterly disgusting.
  • Doing a Puzzle: why yes, I do enjoy doing puzzles. There's a certain thrill you get when finishing a 5,000 piece masterpiece of Noah's Ark
  • Reading: College really ruins all the goodness of settling down and reading a fantastic book, now I get to catch up on about 20 books that I've been meaning to read. I just finished the hilarious book, The Unlikely Disciple
  • Not cleaning my room, nor unpacking from college. I absolutely refuse
  • Buying kool-aid from some kids with a lemonade stand. I was their first customer and I would have to say that they had the perfect ratio of sugar to kool-aid. Absolutely the best highlight of my week.
  • Destroying my sister at foosball. So far I've won from her: two tanks of gas, a bag of gummy worms and not getting beat up after the game. I have a gift.
I know folks, it's really easy to get jealous of my summer. But for real, the good stuff is just starting to get here as I leave for my church's Beach Week in 54 hours where I will be joining 200 teenagers as we pray to God that the oil spill doesn't invade the beach and me working on a gorgeous tan. Also, at the end of the month I'll be driving down to the Cleve for a few weddings!
